What Are the Hidden Costs of the War with Iran? | State of Play

March 24, 2026 • 4:00 – 4:45 pm EDT

The war with Iran has had significant consequences for food security, economic security, and humanitarian crises in the Middle East and beyond. The rise in energy costs and disruptions to fertilizer exports are increasing food insecurity, strikes against data centers have brought tech companies to the front lines of the war, and mass displacement, aid cuts, and trade disruptions are sharpening humanitarian crises. With the focus on gas prices, are we missing some of the key consequences of the war with Iran? Which of these new crises are short term and which have implications for the long term?

The CSIS Geopolitics and Foreign Policy Department invites you to a live episode of State of Play to explore the hidden costs of the war with Iran on Tuesday 24 March at 4:00pm EDT. The discussion will feature Emily Harding, Caitlin Welsh, Mona Yacoubian, and Will Todman.

This event is made possible through general support to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
